This is my second entry in to the Bloggers Quilt Festival over at Amy’s Creative Side. I made this quilt for my eldest son as a surprise to go with his first ‘big boy bed’ (he’s obsessed with Union Jack’s) following a sew along over at Lily’s Quilts. Thankfully the instructions were fantastic so the hardest part was deciding which fabric to use! I wanted it to look quite vintage and scrappy so the ‘white’ areas are made up of lots of different cream and white coloured fabrics – some patterned, some solid. The other fabrics I chose with a seaside/boat kind of theme as he picked out fabric covered in sailing boats for his noticeboard, and I tried to make sure that the colours definitely appeared red or blue to give the Union Jack shapes good definition. Thankfully he absolutely adores his first bed sized quilt and it lives on his bed, although it could be half the size and it would still swamp him – plenty of room to grow! It finishes up at about 70″ x 90″.
